A&E performance league table
Every general A&E hospital in England and Scotland, ranked by the proportion of patients seen within four hours. Figures are the official published numbers for March 2026. Low is bad. High is good.
How to read this table honestly
A league table compares hospitals, but the number behind it depends on who walks through the door. A hospital seeing mostly minor injuries will look fast; one taking the region's major trauma, strokes and cardiac arrests will look slow even when it is working well. These figures do not measure how good the care is — they measure how quickly an A&E moves people through, which is affected by staffing, bed availability and how many patients arrived that month.
Ranked hospitals have at least 2,500 attendances in the month. Smaller units are excluded because a percentage from a few hundred patients swings wildly and would misrepresent the hospital. They remain listed in all hospitals.
Two measures, and they disagree
The four-hour measure and the twelve-hour measure do not produce the same ranking, and that is a real signal rather than an inconsistency. A hospital can be slow for most people yet almost never leave anyone waiting twelve hours; another can be roughly average overall but repeatedly leave its sickest patients waiting half a day.
Worst on four hours
Kingston Hospital, Derriford Hospital, Royal Stoke University Hospital, Royal Shrewsbury Hospital
Worst on twelve hours
Warrington Hospital, Countess Of Chester Hospital, Whiston Hospital, Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

What this table does not tell you
- Nothing about your own condition. A hospital with a poor average may still see a suspected stroke immediately — clinical priority always outranks arrival order.
- Nothing about travel. A hospital 40 minutes away with a better figure is not necessarily the right choice. Use the fastest-A&E checker, which accounts for the journey.
- Nothing about quality of care. Waiting time is one measure among many. It is not a rating of the hospital, its staff or its outcomes.
Never use this table in an emergency. In a life-threatening emergency call 999. For non-urgent advice call 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk. Never travel past your nearest A&E to save time.
